Irish Sport Horse Studbook Showjumping Series 2009 – Grand Finals

The Grand Finals of the Irish Sport Horse Studbook Showjumping Series 2009 took place at Tattersalls Ward Union Hunt International Show, which ran from 24th to 26th July. There was in excess of €15,000 in prize money on offer from Horse Sport Ireland for these young horse classes.
The 6/7 Year Old Grand Final took place on Saturday, with 23 horse/rider combinations starting. Eight of these combinations made it through to the jump off, where there was €5,000 in prize money on offer. In the end it was Lieutenant Michael Kelly and the Minister for Defence’s mare, Major Chance (ISH), who scored victory for the Army Equitation School, coming home double clear in a time of 31.14 seconds. Winning the 6/7 Year Old League was Clem McMahon and the seven year old mare, Belle Rock (ISH).
Commenting on his League win, Clem McMahon said, “It is unfortunate that the weather has been so bad in the lead up to the show but all credit is due to the Tattersalls team for their efforts in assuring the show went ahead.” He continued, “It is a great success to win the league, and I am particularly delighted as the owners of this mare are also the breeders. They have produced three decent horses from the dam and it is a good example that to breed performance horses the mare herself needs to have had performance.” He said, “The mare did not jump her best today as she does not like bad ground but I knew we had done enough in previous rounds to secure a good lead and when Ross Mulholland did not make the second round, I knew we had it.”
The 5 Year Old Grand Final took place on Sunday and riders lined out to compete for the €5,000 prize fund, as well as the €1,750 on offer for the top three in the League. Edward Doyle produced the first clear in the initial round and was joined by three others for the jump off. Achieving a double clear in the time of 36.81 seconds, Edward took the Grand Final class with the Cruising (ISH) stallion Castellar (ISH), who is owned and was bred by Dr. Noel Cawley. Taking joint first in the 5 Year Old League were Conor Drain & Porsch’s Diamond (ISH) and Gerard Clarke & Ardragh Stein (ISH), who finished second in the Grand Final class.
Afterwards owner and breeder of Castellar (ISH), Dr. Noel Cawley said, "The stallion comes from a very good breeding line, and his full sister has qualified to compete in the Three year-Old Loose Jumping Class at Dublin this year. These Studbook classes have been great for breeders and owners and are a very good preparation for Irish Sport Horses that may go on to jump internationally."
Horse Sport Ireland would like to congratulate all riders, owners and breeders that have enjoyed success throughout the 2009 Series and would like to thank all the venues for their efforts in hosting both the qualifier legs and the Grand Finals.
