The third leg of the Irish Sport Horse Studbook Showjumping Series 2009 took place at Mullingar International CSI2* this weekend. The two qualifier places took place on Saturday with the top 20 combinations in each qualifier making it through to Sunday’s finals. Horse Sport Ireland had a prize fund of €10,000 on offer for these young horse classes.

The 5 Year Old Final took place on Sunday morning. Ten horses jumped clear in the first round to make it through to the jump-off, which is not run against the clock. It was a superb final, with four combinations jumping double clear rounds and splitting the prize money. One of these four, were Trevor Breen and the Coffey’s stallion, Oldtown KC (ISH), who is by Cruising (ISH) out of the international showjumping mare, Oldtown Katie (ISH). Of his win, Trevor said “the new format in these classes, where the five year olds are not run against the clock, is excellent. It allows us to still compete for great prize money and at the same time produce our young horses properly.” Trevor had also brought Oldtown KC’s dam, Oldtown Katie (ISH), to Mullingar to compete in the international classes.

The 6/7 year old final followed the 5 year old class and, again, ten combinations made it through to the jump-off. Mervyn Clarke Jnr held the lead in the second round for most of the class, with Lady Latt (ISH). Clem McMahon and Belle Rock (ISH) jumped clear and quick, to take the lead from Mervyn. Second last into the ring were Lieutenant Michel Kelly and Major Chance (ISH). The duo jumped a faultless round in the fastest time to take the class. Major Chance (ISH) is a half sister to another of the Army Equitation School horses, River Foyle (ISH) who is partnered by Capt. Shane Carey.

The next leg in the Series will take place at Galway County Show, which runs from 20^th to 21^st June. Full results and breeding information are detailed below.
