Horse Sport Ireland were delighted to sponsor eight championships at this year’s Dublin Horse Show, which ran from 6^th to 10^th August. With in excess of €130,000 on offer from Horse Sport Ireland, as well as breeders’ prizes, the standard of competition was exceptionally high.

The first of the championships to take place was a new class at Dublin, the 3 Year Old Future Competition Horse class. Taking top honours was William Shanahan’s colt (ISH) by Lux Z. On Thursday evening, the ever popular 3 Year Old Loose Jumping took place, the class being held in memory of Michael Osborne. Winning this prestigious class was Heathermore Captain’s Dream (ISH), owned by Noel Patrick Kilroy and bred by Kevin Kennedy.

Horse Sport Ireland sponsored three national showjumping championships, the 4 Year Old Mr. Springfield Championship, the 5 Year Old Carling King Championship and the 6 Year Old Cruising Championship. Preliminary rounds in each of the championships culminated in the finals on Saturday and Sunday. The standard of jumping was extremely high in all these classes, which were restricted to Irish bred horses. Winning the 4 Year Old Championship was the Minister for Defence’s Mullentine Parscourt One (ISH) ridden by Captain Shane Carey. Mervyn Clarke Jnr. and Lady Latt (ISH) took top spot in the 5 Year Old Championship, while Fiona Campbell and Sallymount Touch Of Clover (ISH) were victorious in the 6 Year Old Championship.

The Breeders Championship, held in memory of Lynn Aldridge, took place on the Friday of the show. A new format for judging the class was introduced for 2008 and the standard of entries was excellent. The judges eventually decided on John and Cathal Dineen’s Kilsinihan Lass (ISH), a Big Sink Hope (TB) mare bred by Fred Bourke from County Clare. The top prize for foals by a Thoroughbred sire went to Derry Rothwell’s colt foal (ISH) by Lakeshore Roada (TB).

Horse Sport Ireland also sponsored the Young Riders Speed Derby. Sarah Glynn and Killossery Wrens Nest (ISH) were victorious in this new class, after completing the course without any faults. On the final day of the show, the Working Hunter Championship was judged. Taking the title of Working Hunter Champion was Patrick Cotter’s Golden Bud (ISH), bred by Albert Reid and shown by Rosemary Connors.
