Irish Horse Board Sponsorship at the Dublin Horse Show 2006

With the overall emphasis at the 2006 Dublin Horse Show very much focused on Irish bred horses, the Irish Horse Board committed major sponsorship to this year’s show. Among the aims of the Dublin Horse Show is to support the Irish Sport Horse breeder and producer through showcasing and developing a market for Irish bred horses. This dovetails neatly with the IHB objectives and this year the IHB teamed up with the RDS to provide major sponsorship for a number of classes all aimed at promoting Irish-bred horses. 

The first of the IHB sponsored classes to get under way was the 4 Year Old National Showjumping Championships. Two qualifiers were held, the first on Wednesday afternoon and the second on Saturday afternoon. The combined scores from the two qualifiers were taken and the top six horses went through to the final on Sunday evening. The IHB sponsored prize money of €15,000 for this Championship, with €10,000 being on offer for the final. 

The format for the 4 Year Old class was based on an equitation system. In the final the riders first rode their own horses over a course of ten fences with top International Showjumpers Molly Ashe (USA), Peder Fredricson (Swe), Ulrick Kirchhoff (Ger) judging. The horses were then ridden by one of two Irish International showjumpers, Cameron Hanley and Shane Breen. Winning the class was Revelene (ISH) ridden by Trevor Bartlett. After finishing in first position in both of the qualifiers, Revelene was certainly deserving of the title of 4 Year Old National Showjumping Champion. The class was a huge success and an excellent showcase of young Irish showjumping horses. Full results can be found below.

The second IHB sponsored class at the Dublin Horse 2006, was the 3 Year Old Loose Jumping Championship. This class was also confined to Irish breds and took place on Thursday evening. Over 1,500 people were in attendance to watch the 25 entries perform. With a prize fund of €20,000, (including a €5,000 breeder prize fund) this was certainly a hotly contested class. This class was held in honour of the late Michael Osborne, former Chairman of the IHB.

Winning the class was Shannondale Taipan (ISH), owned by Joe Logan. This horse was bred by Michael Walsh, who received the breeder’s prize of €5,000 and who showed the horse for the owner. John Osborne, son of the late Michael Osborne, presented the ‘Michael Osborne’ Perpetual Challenge Trophy to the winner. Full results are listed below.

The third IHB sponsored class was the Breeders’ Championship. The aim of the Breeders’ Championship is to showcase high quality Irish mares and their progeny. Prize money of €20,000 was on offer this year. Incorporated into the prize fund was a purse of €5,000, which was allocated to the top three foals by an approved Thoroughbred sire. The Breeders Championship Cup was presented in memory of Lynn Aldridge, former IHB Director General.

The preliminary round took place on Friday morning, with eleven mares and foal being selected to take part in the final taking place on Saturday morning. The winner was Desmond Gibson’s Hillsides Amazing Grace (ISH), who received the top prize of €5,000. Winning the foal section was the colt foal by Nash Me (TB) out of Kildysart Royale (ISH), owned by Kieran O’Gorma. Full results are given below.
