The Department has now confirmed twenty-eight cases of Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA), the most recent on 10 December. The cases continue to be concentrated, with some exceptions, in the Meath/Kildare/Dublin area. All but three of the cases confirmed to date have been in thoroughbred horses.

The new Irish Horse Board Young Breeders Competition was established this summer with the aim of encouraging young people to get involved in the judging and showing of horses. A large number of young breeders gathered in July 2006 hoping to be selected to represent the Irish Sport Horse Studbook at the WBFSH Young Breeders Competition in 2007.

Irish Sport Horses produced some excellent results on both the showjumping and eventing circuits last week. At the Northern Ireland International Horse Show, Belfast, Irish Sport Horses dominated the results and there were few classes where they failed to be included in the top placings. In eventing, Lt. Geoff Curran had a successful few days, finishing 10th in the CCI*** and 25th in CIC** at Pau with his Irish Sport Horses Kilkishen and Luggala.

Irish Independent Echo Beach (ISH) and Cian O’Connor were still in form after at good week at HOYS, finishing 12th in the 1m55 Grand Prix in Oslo. On the national showjumping circuit, the fourth leg of the Cannon Kirk Homes Grand Prix took place at Kill Equestrian where Early Days (ISH) and Richie Moloney jumped a superb round against the clock to win the class

Each year a Battle of the Breeds competition takes place at the Masters Tournament, Spruce Meadows. The competition consists of five different classes - Compulsory Skills (dressage ridden or driven), Jeopardy Jumping, Obstacle Driving, Barrel Racing and Jeopardy Trail. Each breed enters a 4-horse team, with two representatives from the team competing in each of the five classes.

Irish Sport Horses dominated in the CCI**** at Burghley Horse Trials over the weekend. Moon Fleet, the Irish-bred gelding, finished in an impressive second place with Andrew Hoy on board. Irish Sport Horses enjoyed a successful week at Hickstead. In the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, Jane Annett (Gbr) and Cullawn Diamond (ISH) were one of only two double clear rounds and were only beaten on time in this prestigious class. Shane Breen (Irl) also enjoyed considerable success with his two mounts, Mullaghdrin Gold Rain (ISH) and Royal Concorde (ISH).

Irish Sport Horses were in the prizes last week in both showjumping and eventing. In Ypaja (Fin), the 17 year old stallion Sails Away (ISH) and Sebastian Numminen (Fin) won the Ypaja Grand Prix. Meanwhile at Burgie (Gbr), two Irish Sport Horses finished in the top ten in the CCI** and two finished in the top ten in the CCI*.

The Irish Horse Board were proud sponsors of the Punchestown International Three Day Event and Horse Show over the weekend. With the return of the event in 2006, the IHB were delighted to be title sponsor of the CCI*** with a prize fund of €40,000. In addition to the eventing competition, showjumping and dressage classes were also held at Punchestown. The IHB series of showjumping classes for 5 year olds and 6/7 year olds opened at this prestigious event, as did the first Potential Irish Dressage Horse qualifier class.

The 2006 Badminton Horse Trials got underway last week from Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th May. The competition proved to be a great success for the Irish with six Irish bred horses finishing in the top ten.

Last weekend saw the annual Horse of the Year Show take place in Birmingham and it was a definite success for the Irish Sport Horse. The culmination of the show was undoubtedly the HOYS Grand Prix, where Two Mills Showtime (ISH) and Robert Maguire beat off stiff competition to win the €34,000 class. Meanwhile in eventing, the Fair Hill International CCI*** saw no less than 19 Irish Sport Horses competing with Hannigan (ISH) and Phillip Dutton being the highest placed.

Captain Shane Carey and Irish Sport Horse Laughton Lass won the 1m35 Table A competition on Friday in the CSI4* in Napoil, Italy. Carey was also successful with Lismakin, the pair finished 6th on Saturday in the 1m40 Small Grand Prix and 7th in Fridays 1m50 Table A competition and 7th in Sundays 1m45 Accumulator.

Congratulations to Rich Fellers (USA) and Irish Sport Horse McGuinness who won the $100,000 Del Mar GP in San Diego for the 2nd year running, it is the first time this has been achieved in the 60 years this prestigious event has been running.

Irish Sport Horses had a great weekend in Massazza. On Friday Fidel Vogt (Lie) and Graceland won the 1m30 2 phase competition, Eddie Dermody (Ire) and Cruising Princess finished 2nd, with Beniamino Capurso (Ita) and Ireland finishing 3rd.

Irish Sport Horses dominated the 1m50 competition in the CSI3* competition in Arezzo (Ita) on Friday. I Caesar and Dermot Lennon (Ire) jumped fantastically to take 1st place, Francesco Franco of Italy and Irish Sport Horse Cruising Girl finished 4th, Shane Breen with World Cruise finished equal 8th in the same competition.

Irish Sport Horse Riverside Glenn and Robert Smith (Gbr) jumped brilliantly to win the 1m30 class on Friday (25th) in Goteborg (Swe). The pair were also placed 2nd in Thursdays 1m40 class and 4th in Saturdays 1m40 Table C competition.

Irelands Billy Twomey and Irish Sport Horse Killy Jones finished 2nd in Fridays exciting 1m50 Grand Prix in Frontera, Spain. The successful Irish duo finished just 0.4sec behind G. Cashmore (Nzl). The pair jumped fantastically on Thursday to finish 2nd in the 1m45 course.

Irish Sport Horse McGuinness and Rich Fellers jumped superbly to win the €75,000 Indio Grand Prix on Sunday March 6th. The pair had a fantastic round of jumping to finish just ahead of fellow American Francie Steinwedell.

The Irish Sport Horse was well represented at the sunny Vejer de la Frontera competition in Spain last weekend. Irish Sport Horse Killy Jones ridden by Billy Twomey (Irl) finished 2nd in the 1m40 class on Friday and was 2nd in the 1m45 Table A class on Saturday.

Irish Sport Horse Carling King and Kevin Babington (Ire) were back in action in the CSI W in Palm Beach this weekend. The successful Irish Pairing were unlucky to finish just half a second behind the American winner A. Kursinski in the FEI World Cup Grand Prix on Sunday.

Irish Sport Horse That's Life was the only Irish competitor jumping in the CSI W in Vigo this weekend. Ridden by Michel Hecart of France, the pair finished 6th on Friday (10th) in the 1m40 Premio Coren in the Spanish city of Vigo.

It was a successful weekend of showjumping for the Irish Sport Horses in Paris Porte de Versailles (Fra). On Friday 26th That's Life and Michel Hecart (Fra) came out on top in the 1m40 Hotel Rond-Point des Champs Elysees. The pair are having a fantastic season of show-jumping and continue their success finishing 3rd in the 1m40 Prix FFE Generali Assurances on Saturday.

It was a fantastic weekend for the Irish Sport Horse in Gorla Minore CSI2* (ITA). Fidel Vogt (Lie) and Touch Of Clover jumped to success winning the 1m50 Gorla Minore Grand Prix on Sunday. The pair finished 7 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor, Irish Sport Horse VDL Groep Calvaro Star and Samantha McIntosh (BUL).

Irish Sport Horse VDL Groep Calvaro Star (ISH) jumped to success at the Chernyakhovsk, Russia CSI 4* (September 10th-12th) finishing in second place in the Stud Georgenburg Grand Prix of Stroytransgaz with Samantha McIntosh of Bulgaria on board. After an exciting jump off Samantha landed in second place winning €24,000 just behind Gerfried Puck of Austria.

Following the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport to accept the appeal of the National Olympic Committees of France, Great Britain and the United States against the awarding of the Eventing Gold medal to Bettina Hoy (GER) the Individual Gold Medal has now been awarded to Leslie Law (GB) who rode the Irish Sport Horse "Shear L'Eau". This pairing also celebrated Olympic victory in the team stakes with Great Britain taking home the Silver Medal.

At the Hickstead CSIO 5* Superleague show in England (July 21st-25th) Mr. Springfield (ISH) was ridden by Robert Smith (GB) to take third in the Longines King George V Gold Cup Gentleman Grand Prix class yesterday.

Parkmore Ed ridden by William Fox Pitt (GB) took the runner up spot at Bramham CCI*** last weekend. The 11 year old bay gelding by Parkmore Night finished on his dressage score of 49.4. Whos Blitz ridden by Dag Albert (Swe) was placed 8th with two time faults in the cross country and four faults in the showjumping phase, finishing on a score of 73.6.

The results of the 2004 Elections to the Board of the Directors of the Irish Horse Board were announced this week. A total of two seats were up for election this year, one in Region 2 (Tipperary, Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny) and one in Region 4 (Mayo, Galway, Clare).

Irish Sport Horses competed in France, England and Portugal last weekend. The Irish Army Equitation School was represented at the Bourg en Bresse, France CSI 3* by Laughtons Lass (ISH) ridden by Lt. Shane Carey to win Saturdays Prix CIC Lyonaisse de Banque class. In Eventing, the Punchestown CCI*** International Sport Horse Show finished with Tom Quigley (ISH) ridden by Polly Stockton (GBR) taking second place.

Irish Sport Horses were on form in Germany last weekend with three of them finishing in the top ten at the Munich CSI 3* (May 20th-23rd). Sails Away (ISH), ridden by Sebastien Numminen (FIN) jumped double clear to finish fourth while Braveheart (ISH), ridden by B. Goodin (NZL), was faster on the clock but picked up eight faults in the second round to land in fifth place. Clover Brigade (ISH) was ridden by N. Steiner (SUI) to finish eighth after knocking one fence in the first round.

The Sony Ericsson FEI World Cup Final took place over three days in Milan last weekend with Hilton Flight (ISH), ridden by Richard Spooner (USA), coming eighth in Fridays second round and eleventh in Sundays third round to finish overall twelfth in the €205, 128 finale. Ado Annie (ISH) and her rider Will Simpson (USA) also competed at Milan, finishing tenth in Sundays Milano Grand Prix.

Irish Sport Horse Splendido and his rider Harry Marshall (IRE) enjoyed a successful run at the Pioltello, Italy CSI 3* last weekend, culminating in their jumping a double clear round to win Sundays Pioltello Grand Prix. They took second place in both the opening Fridays 1m40 class and a 1m40 class on Saturday also.
