FEI World Breeding Jumping Championships for Young Horses
14th to 17th September 2006, Lanaken, Belgium

The FEI World Breeding Jumping Championships for Young Horses took place from 14th to 17th September 2006 at the Zangersheide Studbook in Lanaken, Belgium. The competition was run over four days and promised to be an exciting event, with the best young examples of the world’s breeds set to compete.

The Irish team was selected on the basis of the top performing Irish Sport Horses from the Irish Horse Board Showjumping League, Dublin Horse Show and Millstreet Horse Show. The IHB was proud to support the participation of these Irish Sport Horses by means of travel grants. In addition to these grants, the IHB offered a further incentive by pledging additional prize money to those horses finishing in the top ten in the finals. Comdt John Ledingham, former Irish international rider, was the Chef D'Equipe.

Unfortunately, both Credit Cruise and Westwinds Cirracruise had to withdrawn prior to the competition, due to injury.

In the qualifiers Irish Sport Horses finished in the top placings in all age categories. After three tough days of competition, three horses had qualified for Sunday’s finals. For the 6 Year Old Final, Clem McMahon qualified with Ramiros Gift (ISH) and Badgerhill Cruise (ISH). Qualifying for the 7 Year Old Final, was IHB Showjumping League winners, Lucy Buchanan and Cavalier Andy (ISH).
Lucy Buchanan and Cavalier Andy (ISH) were the heroes of the day, finishing in 4th position in this highly prestigious class. After a clear first round, the duo were unlucky to have a pole down in the jump off after recording the fastest time in the class. From a start list of 149 horses, Lucy and Cavalier Andy’s result is a massive achievement for the Irish Sport Horse breed. The IHB will present Lucy with additional prize money of €7,000 at a ceremony to be held later this month.

In the Consolation Class for 7 year olds Charles O'Reilly Hyland's Irish Sport Horse stallion Rock Sensation, riden by Steven Smith, jumped an impressive clear round in a time of 72.72. The pair were on top of the leader board for most of the competition, finally finishing in 4th place.
