Important Notice - Changes to the Irish Sport Horse Studbook Rules

The Irish Horse Board is approved by the Minister for Agriculture and Food for the purpose of issuing identity documents for horses. In order to comply with the European Communities (Equine Studbook and Competition) Regulations 2004 [S.I. No.399 of 2004] the Irish Horse Board is announcing a change in the rules of the Irish Sport Horse Studbook. From the 15th of May 2006 horses registered without breeding or with partial breeding with the Irish Horse Board will be issued with a white covered passport/identification document. Such horses will not be entered into the Irish Sport Horse Studbook with the following exceptions:

  • Progeny by an Approved stallion, out of a dam with a white covered passport
  • Progeny out of a Section A mare, by a sire with a white covered passport

Progeny from the above mentioned crosses will be entered directly into the Supplementary Section of the Irish Sport Horse Stud Book and will be issued with a blue covered passport.

All other horses with partial breeding or no breeding must pass inspection to conform to the Irish Sport Horse breed standard before being entered into the Supplementary Section of the Irish Sport Horse Stud Book. On passing inspection white covered passports will be exchanged for blue covered Supplementary passports.

Inspections for entry into the supplementary section of the Irish Sport Horse Stud Book will take place later this year. Details of these inspections will be announced shortly.
