Irish Sport Horses enjoyed considerable success at the Hickstead Derby Show. Shane Breen (Irl) had a particularly good week, winning one class with Royal Concorde (ISH) and another with Dorada (ISH). In Monte Carlo, on the Global Champions Tour, John Whitaker (Gbr) and Casino (ISH) finished in fourth place in the Grand Prix, taking home €21,850 in prize money.

The fairytale win was made even better when Patricia’s husband Michael secured second place on another Irish Sport Horse, Old Road (ISH).

Irish Sport Horses enjoyed success in Grand Prix classes on the showjumping circuit last week. At Comporta, Portugal, the €20,000 Grand Prix class saw Marion Hughes (Irl) and HHS Cashmere (ISH) take third place. In the same class, Harry Marshall (Irl) and Mandrin Smoke (ISH) finished in fifth position, while Stephanie Finetto (Swe) and Merlin’s Magic (ISH) took twelfth.

Ireland finished in second place in the 4* Nations Cup in Wellington, Florida, last Friday. In the same competition, Nick Skelton (Gbr) and Transmission (ISH) finished also in joint second place. On the eventing circuit, Irish-based rider, Duarte Seabra (Por), was fifth in the CIC 2* at Barroca d’Alva, with Carol Gee’s Fernhill Gloster Rebel (ISH). Michael Ryan (Irl) finished in sixth place with Annestown Emperor (ISH).

On the Sunshine Tour, Paul O’Shea (Irl) rode Paul Clarke’s stallion, Shannondale Macalla (ISH), to victory in the €19,700 1m45 class. On the eventing circuit in the CIC 2* at Herdade Vale Sabroso, Patricia Ryan (Irl) finished in twentieth position with Ballylynch Skyport (ISH). Michael Ryan (Irl), also had a successful weekend, finishing in third place in the CIC 1* with Annestown Emperor (ISH).

Mandy Hall’s Casino (ISH) and Great Britain’s John Whitaker were one of only two combinations to make it into the jump off at Olympia before Christmas. John set the fastest time but was unlucky to have a fence down to finish in second place and take home his share of the €67,000 prize fund.

It was a successful show for Roelof Bril (Ned) and Calover (ISH) in Katowice, Poland, last week. The duo won two 1m50 classes and finished second in the Grand Prix. In Munich, Toni Hassman (Ger) and Dublin PKZ (ISH) were fourth in the Young Horse class. While in Wellignton, Sarah Tredennick (USA) and Special Verdict (ISH) finished in twelfth place in the $60,000 FEI World Cup Grand Prix.

William Fox-Pitt (Gbr) rode Ballincoola (ISH) into third place, taking home his share of the £250,000 prize fund. Ballincoola (ISH) also received the Horse Sport Ireland prize of £750 for being the highest placed Irish Sport Horse in the competition. Olympic Team Silver medallists Clayton Fredericks (Aus) and Ben Along Time (ISH) took fourth place, while New Zealand rider, Caroline Powell, and Lenamore (ISH) finished in sixth.

Veteran campaigner, Ringwood Cockatoo (ISH), and Germany’s Bettina Hoy finished in first place at the CCI4* in Pau, France. On the showjumping circuit, Irish Sport Horses were out in force at the Northern Ireland International Horse Show in Belfast.

The Irish Sport Horse Studbook finished in second place at the FEI World Championships for Young Eventing Horses, which took place at Le Lion d’Angers from 16th to 19th October. On the showjumping circuit, in St Lo, France, Captain Shane Carey (Irl) and River Foyle (ISH) were victorious in the Grand Prix Qualifier, taking home their share of the €18,300 prize fund.

Ireland finished in fourth place in the CCI*** at Boekelo in Holland, which ran from the 9th to 12th October. Captain Geoff Curran (Irl) was best of the Irish in the individual results, finishing in 19th place with The Jump Jet (ISH). Irish Sport Horses featured on nearly every team at Boekelo.

The FEI World Breeding Jumping Championships for Young Horses took place in Lanaken, Belgium from 18th to 21st September. The Irish Sport Horse Studbook sent a team of sixteen Irish Sport Horses to Lanaken.

After a strong performance in the final leg of the Superleague Series in Barcelona, Ireland’s showjumping team has retained their place in the Samsung Superleague. Out of the nine countries competing at Barcelona, Ireland finished in fourth place. This placing means that Ireland finish in fifth place in the final league standings, where the top eight showjumping Nations in the world compete.

Rich Fellers (USA) and Flexible (ISH) were part of the winning American team in the 5* Nations Cup at Spruce Meadows on Saturday. On the eventing circuit, the prestigious CCI4* took place at Burghley over the weekend. William Fox-Pitt (Gbr) and Ballincoola (ISH) finished in second place.

Sam Watson (Irl) and Ballybolger Bushman (ISH) finished third in the CIC** at the Gatcombe International Horse Trials over the weekend. The duo received a dressage score of 49.5 and were clear cross country. After just one fence down in the showjumping phase they finished on a score of 53.5.

Rolo Tomasi (ISH) and Peter Smyth (Irl) finished joint third in the Hickstead DFS Derby on Sunday, taking home over €11,000 in prize money. The Derby course proved to be tough with no clear rounds in the first round of jumping.

Ringwood Cockatoo (ISH) and Bettina Hoy (Ger) won the CIC 3* at Luhmuhlen over the weekend. Ringwood Cockatoo (ISH) is a veteran campaigner at the age of seventeen, and in the 2005/2006 WBFSH Eventing Rankings was the highest ranked horse in the world.

The first Nations Cup competition in the Samsung Superleague Series 2008 took place at La Baule, France, last Friday. After two rounds of jumping, Ireland finished joint second in the first of these elite Nations Cup classes. Two Irish Sport Horses featured on the team, Cian O’Connor (Irl) with Irish Independent Echo Beach (ISH) and Captain Shane Carey (Irl) with River Foyle (ISH). Edward Doyle (Irl) with Sequoyah Farms Utopia and Denis Lynch (Irl) with Lantinus 3 made up the Irish team.

Irish Sport Horses were in the prize money at the CSI 4* in Birmingham. In the British Open Championship World Cruise (ISH) and Shane Breen (Irl) took fourth place. In the same class, John Whitaker (Gbr) rode Casino (ISH) into fifth place while Di Lampard (Gbr) and Master Cruise (ISH), who is a full brother to World Cruise (ISH), finished in tenth place.

In eventing, winning the CIC*** World Cup event was American rider Clark Montgomery and the Irish Sport Horse Up Spirit (ISH).

Irish Sport Horses showed superb form in Grand Prix classes on the Sunshine Tour, as well as in Thermal and Villeneuve-Loubet. On Sunday, Francis Connors (Irl) and Merlins Magic (ISH) jumped double clear to finish fourth in the 1m55 Grand Prix. At the same show, Sweden’s Jonna Sundblad and Munsboro Fintan (ISH) were victorious in the Ladies Grand Prix.

The FEI confirmed last week that Ireland have regained their position in the Samsung Superleague. After a successful campaign in the FEI Nations Cup series this year, the Irish team have managed to achieve promotion back into the Superleague after being relegated in 2006.

For the forth time this year, Mo Chroi (ISH) and Commandant Gerry Flynn (Irl) have won a Grand Prix class, when the duo were victorious in the Vimeiro Grand Prix in Portugal. The talented pair shaved almost two seconds off Henk Van de Pol’s time, who finished in second place. At the same venue, the Irish team were second in the Nations Cup, securing a further three points in their campaign towards re-entry into next year’s Superleague.

The French team have failed to retain their Superleague position for 2008 after a poor performance in the final leg at Barcelona CSIO*****. The French finished on 27.25 points, narrowly behind the Swiss team who finished on 28.50. The German team were victorious in Barcelona, also winning the series. In the FEI Nations Cup Series, Ireland still hold the lead by 10 points with four legs left to go.

Irish Sport Horse, The Secret Weapon and Chris King (Gbr) have won the Blenheim CCI***, which ran from 6th to 9th September. The duo lay in fifth position after dressage and picked up 2 time faults cross country. However, lying in poll position before showjumping, a four fault round was enough to secure victory. This superb win adds to the Irish Sport Horse Eventing Achievements for 2007, after William Fox-Pitt and Parkmore Ed (ISH) won the CCI**** at Burghley last week.

The Irish Showjumping Team have finished second in the 4* Nations Cup in the Czech Republic. The team, consisting of Commandant Gerry Flynn & Mo Chroi (ISH), Captain Shane Carey & River Foyle (ISH), Cian O’Connor & Irish Independent Echo Beach (ISH) and Conor Swail & Rivaal, finished on four points just a single point behind Great Britain. The result has further strengthened the Irish team’s chances of regaining a Superleague spot next year.

Mo Chroi (ISH) and Commandant Gerry Flynn (Irl) stormed to victory in the Longines Dublin Grand Prix at the Dublin Horse Show last Sunday. The Dublin Grand Prix, considered the event’s premier individual class, was last won by an Irish rider when Cameron Hanley took the class in 2000. Flynn and the superb Irish Sport Horse mare Mo Chroi were one of only two combinations to produce double clear rounds in this prestigious €125,000 class.

The Irish team competing at the Children’s European Championships have won the silver medal in the Nations Cup. The team, comprised of Michael Duffy, Edward Doyle Jnr, Jack Dodd and Jordan Coyle, finished on a score of just four faults after two rounds. The team from Great Britain held the lead on one fault and after a tough jump off, the Irish team beat both Italy and Portugal to clinch the silver medal position.

Marion Hughes (Irl) and Heritage Transmission (ISH) won the Vimeiro Grand Prix in Portugal over the weekend. The duo jumped double clear, and 4 seconds faster than the second placed pair, to scoop the €35,000 class.

At Barbury Castle International Horse Trials, Chris King (Gbr) rode the Irish Sport Horse The Secret Weapon to victory in the CIC***.

The Irish Showjumping Team have scored another important win in their campaigne towards regaining a place in the Samsung Superleague after storming to victory in the Lummen 5* Nations Cup in Belgium. The team, consisting of Captain Shane Carey & River Foyle (ISH), Marion Hughes & Heritage Transmission (ISH), Cian O’Connor & Irish Independent Echo Beach (ISH), and Conor Swail & Rivaal, finished on just four faults in the Belgian Nations Cup.

The Irish showjumping team of Paul O Shea & Jor de l’Enon, Captain Shane Carey & River Foyle (ISH), Conor Swail & Rivaal, and Commandant Gerry Flynn & Mo Chroi (ISH), fought hard for their victory at the CSIO**** in Drammen, where they won the Norwegian 4* Nations Cup. The luck of the Irish continued in the Drammen Grand Prix, where Commandant Gerry Flynn and Mo Chroi (ISH) jumped three faultless rounds to win the €20,000 class.

It was a successful week for the Irish Sport Horse breed in International Showjumping classes. Francis Connors (Irl) and Merlins Magic (ISH) jumped a double clear in the Deauville Grand Prix to finish in forth place. In Hamina, Finland, Captain Shane Carey (Irl) and Cashla Bay (ISH) finished in third place in the Grand Prix class.
