Irish Horse Board Genetic Evaluation Results 2007

The Irish Horse Board is happy to announce the publication of the ‘Genetic Evaluation Results for Stallions Approved in the Irish Horse Register 2007’.

The genetic evaluation report includes Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) for stallions, which are predictions of the genetic advantage that a horse will pass on to its offspring for a particular trait. Currently, the Irish Horse Board publishes EBVs for high level showjumping ability based on rankings in national SJAI competitions and for athleticism, temperament, movement and eight conformation attributes based on the results of IHB stallion and mare inspections.

EBVs are calculated using information from a horse’s own performance in SJAI competitions and from all of its relatives, including parents and progeny. EBVs are published for approved stallions that are available and standing in Ireland, where sufficiently reliable information is available on the horse itself or on its descendents. EBVs for other horses are available to owners, on request, from the Irish Horse Board.

Why refer to Estimated Breeding Values when choosing a stallion?
Showjumping EBVs predict the showjumping ability of a stallion’s offspring. For Irish Sport Horse stallions with showjumping EBVs greater than 120, 70% of their offspring who compete in showjumping competitions will reach the level of 1m30 competitions or above. However, this rate falls to only 15% for Irish Sport Horse stallions with showjumping EBVs less than 100.

Foals by stallions with EBVs for showjumping ability above 120 achieve, on average, €1,100 more at auction than foals by stallions with EBVs for showjumping ability below 100. Foals by stallions with high EBVs are also more likely to sell at auction. Foals out of high EBV mares achieve, on average, €2,200 more than foals out of low EBV mares.

The Irish Horse Board is indebted to the Showjumping Association of Ireland for their assistance with the Genetic Evaluation Report.

The highest ranked stallions for showjumping ability in the 2007 Genetic Evaluation Results are as follows:

1. Hermes de Reve (Be) by Quito de Baussy (SF)
