Irish Sport Horses Flying the Flag in Lanaken

The 2007 FEI World Breeding Jumping Championships for Young Horses got underway in Lanaken, Belgium on Thursday the 27th of September. A total of fifteen Irish Sport Horses travelled to Lanaken to compete in the prestigious young horse competition.

The Irish team were in flying form on Thursday and Friday throughout the 5, 6 and 7 year old qualifiers. In the 6 year old qualifiers both Creevagh Miss Jones (ISH), ridden by Delyth Collins, and H Two (ISH), ridden by Linda Courtney, jumped clear in both qualifiers to secure a place in the 6 year old Final on Sunday. A grand total of three Irish Sport Horse 5 year olds qualified for the 5 year old Final with Oakport White Water (ISH), ridden by Andrew Bourns, Cavalier Tommi Tank (ISH)¸ ridden by Ross Mulholland, and Colgan Cruise (ISH), ridden by Trevor Bartlett, finishing without faults throughout the hotly contested qualifiers.

For those who did not qualify for the Finals, the Consolation classes took place on Saturday the 29th of September. Charlie Grendon’s 5 year old gelding, Marcus Breago (ISH) and Scottie Barclay, put in a superb performance going clear in a time of 58.69 seconds to finish 2nd in the 5 year old Consolation class. Fiona Campbell and Sallymount Touch of Clover (ISH) had the fasted time of 56.32 seconds in the 5 year old Consolation class but were unlucky to be out of the placings after having the last fence down.

The 6 year old Final was the first class to get underway on the Sunday morning. A total of 17 horses made it into the jump off, including Ireland’s H Two (ISH) and Linda Courtney. This duo continued on their impressive form, jumping clear in a time of 35.08 seconds and securing 6th place in the Final.

Irish Sport Horses also featured in the prizes in the 5 year old Final with Colgan Cruise (ISH) and Trevor Bartlett finishing in a very impressive 4th place after going clear in the jump off in a time of 38.30 seconds.

In 2006 the Irish Horse Board introduced a bonus prize money scheme to horses representing the Irish Sport Horse Studbook that finish in the top ten of the Finals in the FEI World Breeding Jumping Championships for Young Horses at Lanaken, Belgium. Following the impressive performance from the Irish Sport Horse team at this years event, the Irish Horse Board will be happy to present Trevor Bartlett, owner and rider of Colgan Cruise (ISH),with a cheque for €7,000 and Linda Courtney, owner and rider of H Two (ISH),with a cheque for €5,000 at the IHB AGM on the 25th October in recognition of their achievements.

With the introduction of the IHB Showjumping League in 2005, the IHB have put considerable resources into promoting and showcasing talented young Irish Sport Horses. In addition the IHB provided significant sponsorship and financial support for horses representing the Irish Sport Horse Studbook at Lanaken and are delighted to see young Irish Sport Horses competing successfully at such a high international level.
